Cannot get pilot too light can hold pilot on for several minutes when I switch to the arm position it goes out

How close can this be placed to a flammable surface?

The minimum required clearance for this unit is 3 feet all around and 3 feet above from the top so 3-4 feet would be the recommendation. For more information regarding clearances you can also reference pages 2 and 10 in the manual provided in the specifications section. Do the heaters take a battery for the igniter?

Great question. The installation manual (pg.11) states that yes the black igniter does take AAA battery and this unit does not include batteries.
